Puppy Placement Process

I:  Application

If you are interested in acquiring a Lakecrew PWD, we ask that you submit a puppy placement application.  Your honest and detailed answers will help us place the right puppy in the right home.  As you go through the form, please give careful thought to our questions and your answers.  We encourage you to ask questions at any time.

We will review your completed questionnaire and then call you to discuss your criteria for a puppy.  Rest assured that the majority of PWD breeders out there will have a similar puppy placement process.  If not, it may be a red flag that the breeder is careless with their placements.  Remember that you can, and should, ask breeders your own set of questions!

II:  Waiting List / Deposit

If a Lakecrew PWD puppy is a good fit for you and your family, the next step is either:
  1. Waiting List - If we have a litter planned for the future:
We will place you on a waiting list for that litter.  Being on our waiting list does not obligate you to purchase a puppy, and you may ask to be removed from the list at any time.  As soon as we find out whether the breeding was successful, we will notify everyone on our waiting list.  If a pregnancy is confirmed, those on our waiting list will have first chance to send in a deposit.
    - or -
  2. Deposit - If we have a confirmed pregnancy, or puppies on the ground:
We will ask for a good faith deposit of $500 to hold your puppy.  That deposit will be applied toward the total cost of the puppy.  When we send the deposit form, we will include a copy of our sales contract so that you will have an opportunity to review it before sending your deposit.  Please read the "Lakecrew Portuguese Water Dogs Conditional Agreement of Sale Contract" carefully and voice any questions or concerns you may have about it.
    Deposits:

When you provide Lakecrew PWDs with a puppy deposit, you are committing to purchase one of our puppies.  When we accept your deposit, we are committing to provide you with one of our puppies (if possible).  Once every puppy is spoken for, we will refer future inquiries to other breeders.

We will choose a puppy for you based upon your requirements and lifestyle.  We will also try to match any stated coat type and color preferences if we can.

Factors which may affect our ability to place a puppy with you:

    • Number of puppies in the litter
    • Temperaments and personalities of the puppies
    • Sex of puppies (if you have listed a specific sex as a requirement)
    • Results of the pet/show evaluation

Your deposit will be completely refunded if we determine that there is not an appropriate puppy available for you from our litter.

If you change your mind or go elsewhere for a puppy, your deposit will not be refunded.   That is because we will have to start the placement process all over again for that puppy.

III:  Placement

All puppies will be placed as either PET or SHOW dogs, with corresponding contracts.  We will not later re-evaluate the pet pups for show potential.
  • Our pet puppies are sold on AKC Limited Registration and spay/neuter contracts, and are never to be bred.
  • Our show potential puppies are sold on a co-ownership contract, with showing and breeding terms specified.

The price is the same for our pet and show puppies, but the options and responsibilities are much different.

If you think you might be interested in a show prospect puppy, we recommend that you take a few moments to read our "Pet versus Show" page.

We use a different set of criteria for placing show prospect puppies than we do pet puppies.  We look for owners who either already have experience finishing dogs or are fully committed to taking on all the responsibilities that come with ownership of a show potential puppy.

If you are opting for a pet/companion puppy, that does not mean the puppy you get will be poor quality.  The differences between our show and pet puppies are usually very subtle.

Our puppies will be watched from the beginning to determine temperament and personality.  In addition, they will be evaluated for show/breeding potential at about 7 weeks.  All of that information will be used to match up each puppy to its new prospective family.

It is VERY important to match the temperament of a puppy with a caring and responsible family whose activity and experience levels will provide the greatest success for that puppy and the greatest satisfaction for the owners.  While we will also try to match a puppy based upon coat type and color, we consider those to be secondary characteristics.

The puppies will be ready for their new homes at 8-9 weeks of age.  They will have been wormed, microchipped and given their first set of vaccinations.

We provide new owners with a binder of information about their new puppy.  It will include vet visit information, puppy care guidelines, health certifications for the parents, general PWD information, and photos of the puppy & parents.

We will also send home a goodie bag containing, among other items, a copy of "The Portuguese Water Dog, Guide for the New Owner" by Verne Foster, and a laminated PWD clipping guide (which illustrates scissoring and clipping for both the lion clip and the retriever clip).

As responsible breeders, we wish to stay in touch with those who purchase our puppies.  Doing so helps us keep track of their growth, health, and activities.  We will occasionally request that you send us photos of your Lakecrew PWD.  If that type of communication isn't your cup of tea, then we are not the right breeders for you.

We want you to be happy and content with your pup AND with us as breeders.  We also want your pup to be happy and content with YOU.  That is why it is SO important that careful, educated decisions are made regarding ownership of a Lakecrew PWD.
